The Met Will Sell Its Gilbert Stuart Vaughn-Type Portrait of Washington
January sneaks up on you fast. Christie=E2=80=99s has already released high=
lights from its American art sales that take place on the 18th and 19th of =
the monthly. The top lot is a deaccessioned Gilbert Stuart portrait of Geor=
ge Washington that is being sold by New York=E2=80=99s Metropolitan museum =
to benefit its acquisition fund. Vaugh-type portraits of the first presiden=
t=E2=80=94they=E2=80=99re named for an early owner and 14 are known to exis=
t today=E2=80=94show Washington facing to the right. Only five of these wor=
ks are still in private hands and Christie=E2=80=99s has estimated the work=
at $1.5 million. That is the same estimate that was placed on another exam=
ple that Christie=E2=80=99s sold in May of 2017 for $1.3 million [ https://=

ZXI5In0.nCNhOM3c1d0jQmMpisrMe5iRnigHXx6Fx_g6pp7gWdY ]. The next year, anoth=
er example that was documented back to Alexander Scott whose name appears i=
n Gilbert Stuart=E2=80=99s papers identifying him as one of =E2=80=9CA list=
of gentleman who are to have a copies of the Portrait of the President of =
the United States,=E2=80=9D sold in the David Rockefeller sale for $11.5 mi=
llion against an estimate of only $800,000 even though the version was ofte=
n reproduced in scholarly work and had been owned by John D. Rockefeller, J=
r before David Rockefeller received it as a gift. Christie=E2=80=99s isn=E2=
=80=99t looking at the Rockefeller price as a precedent but the Met=E2=80=
=99s provenance should add value that might price this work above the 2017 =
transaction.=C2=A0
Other works on offer in the sales are portraits of Benjamin Franklin and Be=
njamin Rush by Thomas Sully, a Washington portrait by Rembrandt Peale and a=
sketch of a Houdon bust of Washington by Peale as well. Folk paintings by =
Ammi Phillips, Joshua Johnson, William Matthew Prior and Winthrop Chandler =
will also be sold alongside Colonial silver, chairs by Philadelphia carver =
John Pollard and other pieces of folk sculpture.
Richard Prince Brings a Gun to a Knife Fight
Court cases for appropriation artist Richard Prince aren=E2=80=99t anything=
new. In May, a judge cleared photographers Eric McNatt and Donald Graham t=
o go to trial against Prince over his use of their photographs in two separ=
ate art works from Prince=E2=80=99s New Portraits series of Instagram-based=
art works. One of the defining aspects of Prince=E2=80=99s practice has be=
en his willingness to confront the issues surrounding his use of found imag=
es head on.=20
Until now, Prince=E2=80=99s team has been Los Angeles-based Intellectual pr=
operty and litigation lawyers from Greenberg Traurig, Nina Boyajian and Ian=
Ballon. The photographers have been represented by IP lawyers from Cravath=
, David Kappos and David Marriott.=20
With the case may be moving to trial, Prince has announced Quinn Emmanuel p=

Art Auction Sales Drop 27% as Fewer $10 Million Works Are Sold, Report Find=

=E2=80=99s): If you have been following our auction analysis, it won=E2=80=
=99t come as a surprise to you that within the overall sales drop this year=
has been a shift toward lower-priced lots. Arttactic puts some numbers beh=
ind that in a Barron=E2=80=99s article saying there was a 30% drop in the n=
umber of lots offered on the market above $10m. In addition, there was an 1=
8% rise in the number of lower value lots sold but only a 7.4% rise in valu=
e. That=E2=80=99s a lot of lower value art changing hands at auction which =
is the opposite of the kind of flight to quality we see in down years or di=
stressed markets. These numbers suggest that collectors and dealers are sti=
ll hungry for lower value art. According to Arttactic, 10,350 works with es=
timates below $50,000 were sold for a total of $153 million. That=E2=80=99s=
an average lot value of just under $15,000. Who says the middle class has =
been priced out of the art market?
Kristina O=E2=80=99Neill becomes Head of Sotheby=E2=80=99s Media: Six month=
s after announcing a new global head of content with responsibility for =E2=
=80=9Call Sotheby=E2=80=99s platforms, including its website, app, social m=
edia, newsletters, livestreams, market reports, and quarterly print magazin=
e,=E2=80=9D the auction house announced this week that it also has a head o=
f Sotheby=E2=80=99s Media, a new global initiative anchored in the [m]agazi=
ne and related omnichannel content including digital, audio, and video elem=
ents.=E2=80=9D Both content heads report to Sotheby=E2=80=99s new CMO. The =
key differentiator seems to be that O=E2=80=99Neill, the new head of Sotheb=
y=E2=80=99s Media (not the Global Content Head,) will be in charge of a =E2=
=80=9Cnew signature event for the magazine, the first of which will take pl=
ace in the fall of 2024.=E2=80=9D ~ O=E2=80=99Neill previously ran the WSJ=
=E2=80=99s Innovator awards which was a chance for luxury goods advertisers=
to associate themselves with figures like Ed Ruscha and Martin Scorcese. H=
ow will that translate to Sotheby=E2=80=99s? It=E2=80=99s not clear the eff=
orts to dramatize the Evening sales (at both houses) have been effective in=
generating revenue either from the sales themselves or from sponsors. The =
=E2=80=9Csignature=E2=80=9D in signature event is doing a lot of work here.=

Brooklyn Rail. The Brooklyn Rail=E2=80=99s publisher killed the story. The =
subtext is that the Brooklyn Rail=E2=80=99s leadership lacks the journalist=
ic will and experience to navigate a cranky source. So now we know the Rail=
is what it always appeared to be. That may be cringe but is it really news=
worthy of the Times?

h of the monthly. The top lot is a deaccessioned Gilbert Stuart portrait of=
George Washington that is being sold by New York’s Metropolitan muse=
um to benefit its acquisition fund. Vaugh-type portraits of the first presi=
dent—they’re named for an early owner and 14 are known to exist=
today—show Washington facing to the right. Only five of these works =
are still in private hands and Christie’s has estimated the work at $=
1.5 million. That is the same estimate that was placed on another example t=

8% rise in the number of lower value lots sold but only a 7.4% rise in valu=
e. That’s a lot of lower value art changing hands at auction which is=
the opposite of the kind of flight to quality we see in down years or dist=
ressed markets. These numbers suggest that collectors and dealers are still=
hungry for lower value art. According to Arttactic, 10,350 works with esti=
mates below $50,000 were sold for a total of $153 million. That’s an =
