On Wednesday evening, I hopped on the R train from Puck=E2=80=99s luminous =
new HQ, on the southern tip of Tribeca, and headed up to the neighborhood t=
hat the kids these days call NoMad. As someone who grew up in Lower Manhatt=
an, and who now basks in the warm light of near-middle-age nostalgia, I=E2=
=80=99m ceaselessly amazed by the city=E2=80=99s constant and unapologetic =
reinvention, especially in this particular hood.

As I emerged from the 28th Street station, I recalled a series of distant m=
emories of the area: my father=E2=80=99s old writing office at the Lowenste=
in agency, across from the McDonald=E2=80=99s (still there, amazingly=E2=80=
=A6), off Sixth Avenue; the O.T.B. (not still there) where I once placed be=
ts for traders during a wayward summer job=E2=80=94=E2=80=9990s New York wa=
s lawless for teenagers=E2=80=94and my conjurings of the sinister plot from=
Joseph O=E2=80=99Neill=E2=80=99s remarkable Obama-era novel, Netherland, w=
hich took place in the neighborhood, too. Now all the rot of the Giuliani d=
ays has been covered over entirely. The area is home to a Cecconi=E2=80=99s=
, a gleaming Ritz-Carlton, and populated with young people who=E2=80=99ve n=
ever known a world that included the three-camera sitcom, the Cold War, or =
the Blue Dress.
Anyway, I was off to Borgo, a very
chic new restaurant from the guy behind O.G. Williamsburg joint Marlow & So=
ns, to celebrate my partner Lauren Sherman=E2=80=99s new book. Selling Sexy=
, which Lauren co-authored with The Cut=E2=80=99s Chantal Fernandez, offers=
a fascinating, interrogative, and illuminating look at the history of Vict=
oria=E2=80=99s Secret=E2=80=94from its role as a pioneering mall brand to t=
he Angels era all the way through its Epstein adjacency and modern struggle=
s. The book is filled with impeccable reporting and delicious bon mots. But=
it also traces the arc of the fashion industry=E2=80=99s evolution during =
the past few decades, a period of tremendous consolidation, bloodletting, a=

As it turned out, it was a perfect New York night for a celebration. The we=
ather was still balmy, and guests made good use of Borgo=E2=80=99s back pat=
io. I love hanging with the fashion crowd=E2=80=94back in my earliest days =
at Vanity Fair, these were my people, and the room was filled with magazine=
refugees aplenty, along with designers, executives, journalists, influence=
rs, attractive but serious people, and people who get photographed at parti=
es. To wit: Kate Young, Mickey Drexler, Derek Blasberg, Kristina O=E2=80=99=
Neill, Sara Moonves, Linda Wells, Troy Young, Thakoon Panichgul, Jen Rubio,=

Book parties, a ubiquitous part of my early career, are now few and far bet=
ween. And perhaps because of this, the evening was filled with mirth and go=
od cheer. It also solidified something that I=E2=80=99ve long known, but re=
ally came to the fore throughout the night over small talk and mellifluous =
conversations. Lauren isn=E2=80=99t simply the preeminent fashion journalis=
t of her generation. Instead, she=E2=80=99s ascended to Mount Rushmore-leve=
l, all-timer status, alongside the Menkes and Vreelands and Sozannis of the=
