In November 2019 we wrote to let you know all major banks had signed up to a new industry code, Confirmation of Payee (CoP).
This code is an account name checking service that will confirm if the payment details entered for a person or business match the details their bank holds.
These new regulations are now in effect and while all UK banks will be introducing Confirmation of Payee,they may launch this service at different times. So it's important that you take some steps now to make sure future payments are not delayed.
What do I need to do?
Receiving payments
When receiving any single UK Faster Payment and CHAPS sterling payments:
� If you�re asking someone to pay you, make sure they�re aware of the correct name to use i.e. your exact account name, which may be different from your trading name.
� Make sure any parts of your business that deal with payment-related customer queries are aware of CoP and can provide the correct details to payment originators who might contact you for advice.
Making payments
When making any single UK Faster Payment and CHAPS sterling payments:
� If you're creating a new payee or amending one in Digital Banking or Bankline, it's important to make sure you have the correct name of the account you're making the payment to.
� Review any payee details you have stored in Digital Banking or Bankline to ensure that the details you already have are correct. You should pay particular attention to those where you make payments to a payee infrequently or haven't made a payment for a while.
� You will also need to specify whether the payment is being sent to a personal or business account.
