in Paris in 2016. Bonnard has played an important role in the history of Ac=
quavella. You can hear the story in this podcast interview Bill Acquavella =

pp7gWdY ]. But it boils down to Acquavella taking a gamble on making a rare=
and expensive color catalogue for the exhibition. The marketing gambit dre=
w in Paul Mellon. The final reason for the show is to bring attention to an=
artist whose reputation seems to have dimmed with the public even as he re=
mains a lodestar for colorists of different stripes. Seeing one of the star=
works from the show, a loan from the Guggenheim, next to Mark Rothko=E2=80=
=99s White Center from 1950 (see below) makes the point better than any exp=
lication.

Early Kusama Collectors Sell Two Soft Sculpture Works at Phillips
Phillips announced this week that it would sell Yayoi Kusama=E2=80=99s Red =
Stripes and Blue Spots from 1965 (both estimated at $2.5 million) on May 17=
th. The two early soft sculptures were made by the artist while working in =
the Netherlands under the auspices of Galerij Orez for what was her first g=
allery show in Europe. The works were among several owned by Agnes and Frit=
z Becht and have been in their collection for nearly 60 years. To describe =
the extent of the Becht=E2=80=99s support of Kusama, Phillips tells this st=
ory in their press release:
In 1967, the Bechts bought an entire shipping container of Kusama=E2=80=99s=
work, sight unseen, which was stuck in customs in the UK. Agnes remembers =
bringing the shipping container to the family home on a summer afternoon, a=
nd spreading all nearly forty works out on the grass in the back garden. It=
was an overwhelming, even transcendent experience. =E2=80=9CIt was so beau=
tiful, I think I must have died from it,=E2=80=9D Agnes shared, recalling t=
he moment. It was as if one of Kusama=E2=80=99s infinity rooms landed in th=
e Bechts=E2=80=99 backyard; they were completely immersed in Kusama=E2=80=
=99s world.
Sotheby=E2=80=99s to Sell Four Works Restituted to Heirs of Ambrose Vollard
Four works have been restituted to the heirs of Ambrose Vollard, best known=
as C=C3=A9zanne=E2=80=99s dealer, because although Vollard died in 1939 hi=
s brother and two other art dealers had stolen works from Vollard. Vollard=
=E2=80=99s brother often did deals with Nazis and many works ended up in Ge=
rman institutions. The four works include two drawings, one by Renoir and a=
nother by C=C3=A9zanne, and two paintings. One painting is a Renoir landsca=
pe from 1884 with a $1 million estimate. The most valuable lot is a still l=
ife (above) by Paul Gauguin from 1885 with a $10 million estimate.=20

It=E2=80=99s Been a Big Week for the FBI and Art: The FBI has finally made =
its National Stolen Art File available in the form of an smartphone app. Th=
e FBI=E2=80=99s art crime group has maintained this database for years ofte=
n simply as an Excel file on a laptop. It=E2=80=99s only got 4500 objects l=
isted. The Art Loss Register, a private company, claims 700,000 objects. =
=E2=80=A6 More to the FBI=E2=80=99s credit, an Australian gallery that cons=
igned 36 works to a Santa Fe gallery [ https://substack.com/redirect/93cdd9=

ry. He set new standards with the publication of today's valid catalogues r=
aisonn=C3=A9s of the prints of Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin, Al=
berto Giacometti, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso, among=
others. With him, one of the major figures of the 20th/21st century art wo=

Michael Findlay
The Appraiser=E2=80=99s held their annual Spring lunch on Wednesday where t=
hey honored Michael Findlay. The luncheon was an occasion for Findlay to re=
minisce with Judd Tully, whose documentary about David Hammons was just pic=
ked up for US distribution [ https://substack.com/redirect/357a83f7-cc8f-4f=

6Fx_g6pp7gWdY ], about his long career in the New York art world. Findlay i=
s known for his role at Acquavella Galleries over the last two decades but =
he previously held senior positions at Christie=E2=80=99s. He=E2=80=99s als=
o played important advisory roles for government entities as diverse as the=
IRS and the New York Surrogate=E2=80=99s court where he was appointed over=
seer of the sale of the Macklowe collection. Findlay=E2=80=99s collegiality=
is legendary but the goodwill he has engendered in the art world was on fu=
ll display at the New York Athletic Club luncheon where representatives of =
the Acquavella clan were in attendance along with Sotheby=E2=80=99s executi=
ve team led by CEO Charlie Stewart. For all of Findlay=E2=80=99s establishm=
ent bona fides, the audience was reminded that the 18-year-old Michael Find=
lay arrived in New York from Scotland in 1964 very much the bohemian poet. =
He stumbled into a job at Richard Feigen=E2=80=99s gallery. By 1968, he had=
progressed to full-fledged art dealer. He held an early show of John Balde=
ssari=E2=80=99s work at Feigen=E2=80=99s Soho outpost. In the picture above=
, you can see Findlay seated in front of Baldessari=E2=80=99s Quality Mater=
ial=E2=80=94 which did not find a buyer in 1968. Nearly 40 years later, the=

Two Soft Sculpture Works at Phillips</h4><p style=3D"color: #404040; font-=

d this week that it would sell Yayoi Kusama’s </span><em>Red Stripes<=
/em><span> and </span><em>Blue Spots</em><span> from 1965 (both estimated a=
t $2.5 million) on May 17th. The two early soft sculptures were made by the=
artist while working in the Netherlands under the auspices of Galerij Orez=
for what was her first gallery show in Europe. The works were among severa=
l owned by Agnes and Fritz Becht and have been in their collection for near=
ly 60 years. To describe the extent of the Becht’s support of Kusama,=
Phillips tells this story in their press release:</span></p><blockquote st=

er of Kusama’s work, sight unseen, which was stuck in customs in the =
UK. Agnes remembers bringing the shipping container to the family home on a=
summer afternoon, and spreading all nearly forty works out on the grass in=
the back garden. It was an overwhelming, even transcendent experience. =
220;It was so beautiful, I think I must have died from it,” Agnes sha=
red, recalling the moment. It was as if one of Kusama’s infinity room=
s landed in the Bechts’ backyard; they were completely immersed in Ku=

owe collection. Findlay’s collegiality is legendary but the goodwill =
he has engendered in the art world was on full display at the New York Athl=
etic Club luncheon where representatives of the Acquavella clan were in att=
endance along with Sotheby’s executive team led by CEO Charlie Stewar=
t. For all of Findlay’s establishment bona fides, the audience was re=
minded that the 18-year-old Michael Findlay arrived in New York from Scotla=
nd in 1964 very much the bohemian poet. He stumbled into a job at Richard F=
eigen’s gallery. By 1968, he had progressed to full-fledged art deale=
r. He held an early show of John Baldessari’s work at Feigen’s =
