I want to take a few minutes to tell you my story.

I always dreamed of being a soldier. I served in Afghanistan - and I lost b=
oth my legs there too. Our vehicle triggered a roadside bomb in Helmand pro=
vince.

I was pronounced dead on the operating table. But a medic found the faintes=
t of pulses. My story was not over.

Back in the UK, my wife Ana was by my side as I spent nine days in a coma. =
When I woke up, she had to tell me my legs were gone.

I didn=E2=80=99t believe her at first. She had to take a photo and show me =
what had happened. I was told I=E2=80=99d never walk again.

My life was changed forever. The pain and trauma were sometimes overwhelmin=
g. But I did walk again. One day watching TV, I saw amputees just like me r=
unning for gold in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic games. I thought -=E2=80=AFt=
hat could be me.

I reached out to Help for Heroes. They were there. They=E2=80=99ve been a c=
hampion, a friend and so much more. My wife Ana and I found a community of =
veterans and supporters (like you!) who value the sacrifices I=E2=80=99ve m=
ade.

Five years after being pronounced dead in Afghanistan, I represented Great =
Britain in the 2012 Paralympic games in London.

Yes, it=E2=80=99s me who gets up every day to train despite the pain. I=E2=80=
=99m still a fighter. But it was Help for Heroes who funded the prosthetic =
legs I use to compete. We=E2=80=99re a team. And, Susan, you=E2=80=99re par=
t of that team.
