One of this year=E2=80=99s unexpected joys has come in the form of a bumbl=
ing=2C bubbly little hippo. Bumpy (https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/=
orphans/bumpy) has captured hearts the world over =E2=80=94 myself among t=
hem! From his bright button eyes to his perfectly round ears=2C his roly-p=
oly antics and his absolute adoration for his Keepers=2C he is pure=2C inf=
ectious goodness.

In this month=E2=80=99s Field Notes=2C enjoy some beautiful imagery that b=
rings the magic of Bumpy to life.

Our Life With Bumpy

By now=2C most of you are probably familiar with Bumpy's origin story. I c=
ertainly wasn=E2=80=99t anticipating a tiny hippo to land in our midst tha=
t morning =E2=80=94 but then again=2C we have learned to expect the unexpe=
cted.

Bumpy was rescued by the Kenya Wildlife Service in early May=2C after they=
 received reports of an orphaned hippo calf at Oloiden Resort in Naivasha.=
 They arrived to find a tiny=2C days-old calf nestled beside his mother's=
 lifeless body=2C desperately nudging her with his blunt little nose. Base=
d on the level of decomposition=2C he had been trying in vain to rouse her=
 for at least 24 hours.

Hippos are very territorial creatures. Infanticide is not unheard of=2C wi=
th dominant bulls killing a rival=E2=80=99s offspring to prioritise their=
 own bloodline. Breeding rights aside=2C mother hippos often secret their=
 newborns away from the crowded chaos of the herd=2C a heated environment=
 where fierce fights break out and then are forgotten as quickly as they b=
egan. This is all part of hippo society=2C but can be fraught for a small=
=2C fragile calf. The injuries on Bumpy=E2=80=99s mother suggest that she=
 died in an intra-species fight =E2=80=94 very likely protecting her baby=
=E2=80=99s life.

It was a logistically challenging water rescue=2C and the KWS team did a h=
eroic job. Our SWT/KWS Rift Valley Mobile Vet Unit drove the little orphan=
 down to Nairobi=2C where he was entrusted to our care. The name =E2=80=98=
Bumpy=E2=80=99 fell into place quite naturally; looking upon him=2C we jus=
t felt it fitted.

Given the ordeal he had been through=2C we wondered if Bumpy would arrive=
 quite wild=2C but the opposite proved to be true. He was just happy to be=
 =E2=80=98home=E2=80=99 =E2=80=94 for he very quickly made us his home. Af=
ter Bumpy spent a cosy first night slumbering in the crook of Keeper Simon=
=E2=80=99s arm=2C Taru flew him down to Kaluku=2C where he would continue=
 his journey with us.

Kaluku is an ideal place to raise an orphaned hippo. It sits at the heart=
 of riverine Tsavo=2C dominated by the Athi River. Unlike seasonal rivers=
=2C of which there are many in the landscape=2C the Athi flows year-round.=
 It is home to several resident pods of hippos =E2=80=94 pods that=2C thin=
king long-term=2C Bumpy may reintegrate into in the fullness of time.

However=2C it will be a long time before we are ready to consider that ste=
p. Bumpy is only three months old=2C having come to us within his first we=
ek of life =E2=80=94 but already in that time=2C the wobbly=2C grief-stric=
ken orphan we rescued has blossomed into the undisputed king of his own li=
ttle kingdom. He pads confidently between his cosy stable=2C where he spen=
ds his nights=2C and his personal pool=2C where he spends his days.

True to hippo form=2C Bumpy adores water. He also takes any opportunity to=
 showcase his aquatic prowess. If he sees someone approach his pool=2C he=
 dives into an adorable and utterly captivating routine. As he's gotten bi=
gger and stronger=2C his swimming choreography has become even more elabor=
ate=2C featuring an ever-changing dance of porpoise dives=2C barrel rolls=
=2C and ballet across the pool floor. One of his favourite moves is to flo=
at on his back like an otter=2C with only his round belly and flapping fee=
t visible above the water.

Every burst of action is followed by a good=2C long rest. Bumpy often naps=
 with his body fully submerged save for his head=2C which he rests on his=
 Keeper's foot=2C or else tucked between his Keeper's legs. If he wants a=
 deep=2C undisturbed slumber=2C he sleeps underwater =E2=80=94 hippos have=
 an incredible reflex that allows them to float to the surface for a breat=
h of air=2C then sink down again=2C without ever waking up.

Bumpy is absolutely hooked on his Keepers=2C Festus and Jackson. He follow=
s them like a small=2C rotund shadow=2C chattering away in his noisy hippo=
 grunts. If he's in his pool=2C he peeks his eyes and ears above the water=
 to closely monitor their movements. If he's outside=2C he can usually be=
 found nestled between their feet or napping on one of their laps.

Bumpy isn't the only orphaned hippo at Kaluku. Musumbi =E2=80=94 pictured=
 above =E2=80=94 was rescued nearly a year before him and is about 18 mont=
hs his senior. He greeted the new arrival with little more than a disinter=
ested glance before plodding back to his own pool. Over the past two month=
s=2C that aloofness has softened into a polite=2C though distant=2C intere=
st from his older counterpart.

We have given Bumpy and Musumbi their own personal pools=2C so as to avoid=
 any territorial tension. While they remain happily separate=2C they do oc=
casionally boop noses. Unlike elephants=2C which form multi-generational f=
amily herds that raise their young communally=2C hippo pods are territory-=
based and can be quite transient. Neither Bumpy nor Musumbi crave each oth=
er=E2=80=99s company; they have their own space and their own routine=2C a=
nd seem quite content with their current situations.

But that=E2=80=99s not to say that Bumpy isn=E2=80=99t a social butterfly=
 =E2=80=94 friendships have come from elsewhere in the Kaluku family. Gruf=
f=2C Bibi=2C and Moshi the buffaloes have become thoroughly smitten with B=
umpy. Buffaloes are wallowing creatures=2C so it's not entirely surprising=
 that they would gravitate towards his pool paradise. Gruff=2C who loves a=
ttention from any source=2C has grown especially affectionate towards his=
 new hippo friend. Pips and Twiggy=2C our resident giraffes=2C often find=
 a reason to plant themselves near Bumpy=2C quietly observing his aquatic=
 life.

And then there's Wangalla (https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/=
wangalla) =2C Kaluku's littlest elephant. She usually only has eyes for he=
r Keeper=2C Misheck=2C but has clearly developed a soft spot for Kaluku's=
 littlest hippo. They make an absolutely adorable pair. Wangalla doesn=E2=
=80=99t quite realise that Bumpy isn=E2=80=99t an elephant. Mimicking how=
 her =E2=80=98big sister=E2=80=99=2C Korbessa=2C behaves towards her=2C sh=
e treats Bumpy like a younger sibling to fuss over.

While Bumpy may be bemused by the elephant=E2=80=99s antics=2C he always l=
ikes to see what she is up to. In the early morning=2C they often loiter o=
utside the stockades together while their Keepers prepare for the day ahea=
d. Wangalla tries to soothe him with trunk touches (another trick she lear=
ned from Korbessa)=2C while Bumpy bumbles around. One day=2C little Wangal=
la =E2=80=94 who doesn=E2=80=99t yet have full command of her trunk and ca=
n=E2=80=99t even dust herself =E2=80=94 attempted to toss red earth over h=
is rotund body. This was a step too far for Bumpy and he made a beeline fo=
r his pool.

If Bumpy=E2=80=99s days are for action=2C nights are for rest. After enjoy=
ing his evening bottle al fresco=2C he needs no encouragement to toddle ba=
ck to his stable for bed. We have set up a soft mattress parallel to his K=
eeper=E2=80=99s bed=2C topped by a plush pillow. Bumpy usually does some s=
ort of a dive atop the pillow=2C then shuffles around a bit to get comfort=
able. Before long=2C his button eyes close and he drifts into a deep sleep=
=2E

A few short months ago=2C Bumpy was found alone and frightened. Today=2C h=
is days are full =E2=80=94 splashing in his pool=2C sleeping by his Keeper=
=E2=80=99s side=2C and drawing an ever-growing circle of friends to his li=
ttle corner of Kaluku. His story with us is just beginning=2C but already=
 he has made our lives so much fuller.
Interview with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Team:

Operations Commander=2C Kaluku Headquarters

George=2C it=E2=80=99s been a whole decade with the Trust now!

Yes=2C and so much has happened since I started in early 2016.

Take us back to the beginning. What was it about your childhood that set y=
ou on this path?

My father and mother both worked for the Kenya Wildlife Service.

You grew up in Kenya=E2=80=99s wild spaces=2C didn=E2=80=99t you?

Both my parents worked for the Kenya Wildlife Service. My mother is a scie=
ntist working within the KWS GIS department=2C and my father was there for=
 35 years until he retired. He began as a ranger=2C later moved up the ran=
ks to Company Commander=2C Education Warden for Nairobi National Park=2C a=
nd eventually he was a Senior Warden.

Over the years=2C his work took him to Meru National Park=2C Aberdares Nat=
ional Park=2C Hells Gate National Park=2C Nairobi National Park=2C and fin=
ally=2C Lake Nakuru National Park. I had the benefit of growing up in all=
 these wild places.

Looking back=2C how much of your own career path has been shaped by your f=
amily and upbringing?

My love of nature came directly from my father's work in KWS and the expos=
ure I was fortunate enough to have=2C and my love for IT was inspired by w=
hat my mother does. My passion for nature began in Meru=2C a very beautifu=
l place=2C where my father was Company Commander. Watching my father climb=
 the ranks within KWS within different roles as he continued getting promo=
ted gave me a great overview of the operations of a protected area. That t=
oday has proved invaluable in the work I do.

What did you study in school?

Initially=2C I studied information technology. While that was most helpful=
=2C it did not satisfy my love of Kenya's National Parks. I decided to enr=
oll in KWS=2C so I became a ranger and went to the paramilitary school in=
 Manyani. After completing that=2C I worked in the north=2C in Shaba Natio=
nal Reserve=2C Samburu=2C and then Buffalo Springs. It was here I met a Br=
azilian priest who offered me a visit to Brazil.

Brazil is about as far from Tsavo as it gets =E2=80=94 and a whole new lan=
guage to boot!

Yes it was a challenge and an opportunity I couldn't resist. So=2C I went=
 to visit Brazil and later the Amazon=2C and loved it. I was then given a=
 scholarship to study ecology in Brazil=2C at the Federal University of Es=
p=C3=ADrito Santo. This was a three-year degree=2C all taught in Portugues=
e=2C so I learned the language fluently. I loved the experience=2C but Afr=
ica was calling my home. I wanted to return to Kenya to work=2C rather tha=
n elsewhere in the world. I returned home in 2015.

What came next?

I was given the opportunity to work on a project led by Stop Ivory and the=
 KWS to audit and catalogue Kenya's ivory and rhino horn stockpiles. At th=
e time=2C there were over 10=2C000 elephant tusks and 1=2C200 rhino horns.

This was done in anticipation of President Jomo Kenyatta burning Kenya's i=
vory stockpiles in 2016. More than 100 tonnes of ivory was set ablaze in a=
 ceremony in Nairobi National Park. Kenya's statement that day was that=2C=
 to Kenya=2C ivory is worthless unless it is on our elephants. It was a bo=
ld event that highlighted the impact of poaching.

While poaching remains a threat=2C it is efforts like this and the continu=
ed work of the Trust in partnership with KWS=2C day in and day out=2C that=
 has made a huge difference in recent years.

That census work is really what put you on the Trust's radar=2C isn't it?

While working on the ivory census=2C senior management in KWS were struck=
 by my passion and penned a few great referral letters to Robert Carr-Hart=
ley and Angela Sheldrick. It was on the back of these letters that they of=
fered me the role of Control Room Operator. Over the years=2C the Trust ha=
s grown a lot=2C and my role has expanded to Operations Commander.

How do you describe our Operations Room to people who have never set foot=
 inside?

It is a 24-hour operation=2C because animals and those that mean to do the=
m harm do not operate within a nine-to-five timeframe. In this regard=2C i=
t is challenging. All our field teams report into the control room daily=
=2C with all action meticulously accounted for in the incident books. The=
 teams reporting in daily are our Anti-Poaching Teams=2C Head Keepers at t=
he Orphans' Stockades=2C Veterinary Units=2C KWS requests=2C and our pilot=
s=2C who fly the skies daily.

Just how many people are reporting into the Operations Room each day?

Well=2C we have 30 SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Teams=2C including a Canine Unit=
 and two Drone Units;  seven SWT/KWS Veterinary Units; five units raising=
 over 100 orphaned elephants=2C rhinos=2C and other wildlife; and a team o=
f pilots flying helicopters and airplanes daily=2C on a variety of mission=
s. KWS company commanders will call in with requests=2C so we can coordina=
te SWT support in whichever capacity they request.

Safe to say=2C many hundreds of people are reliant on effective=2C good co=
mmunicational support and coordination when needs arise.

From the Ops Room=2C what does that support entail?

For instance=2C we might receive a report of an injured elephant from KWS=
=2C a tour operator=2C or by one of our teams or pilots. Our job is to hel=
p coordinate the nearest Vet Unit to respond with all the correct coordina=
tes=2C alert the pilots so that aerial support can be on-hand=2C and coord=
inate Anti-Poaching Teams to be onsite on the ground=2C with any needed eq=
uipment.

Another example=2C our Anti-Poaching Teams tell the Ops Room where they ar=
e patrolling ahead of time. Should they sight anything illegal during thei=
r patrol=2C they might request backup of the Canine Unit or the support of=
 aircraft. We monitor their patrols=2C making sure they get back to base s=
afely and coordinate any support they might need.

We recently implemented Earth Ranger=2C which puts all our teams on the sa=
me map. It=E2=80=99s been a huge benefit but also requires constant data i=
mplementation throughout the day. We monitor movements and crosscheck team=
s=E2=80=99 entries=2C to make sure all information is correct and current.

It sounds like every strand of your background =E2=80=94 the IT=2C the ran=
ger training=2C the ecology degree =E2=80=94 feeds directly into this one=
 job.

Yes indeed. My IT background is vital=2C given we are very tech-heavy=2C w=
ith digital radios live-tracking the movements of all our teams and vehicl=
es=2C and our Aerial Unit with Spidertracks so we can track their flights=
 real-time. Ensuring good monitoring of their movements is vital for safet=
y reasons. Data is collected and correlated every day for ourselves and KW=
S. This includes flight paths=2C patrol activities=2C and illegal activiti=
es=2C and also animals sighted each day.

My paramilitary training and experience as a ranger helps me have a better=
 understanding of what support the field requires=2C and in times of live=
 operations=2C it helps me be on the ball with a full understanding of par=
amilitary operations.

My ecology degree helps with all other aspects of the work the Trust under=
takes=2C which are many: reforestation=2C saving habitats=2C water for wil=
dlife=2C tackling invasive species=2C just to name a few.

After ten years=2C what makes you love the work you do?

Being in the bush! Here at our Kaluku Field Headquarters=2C in the heart o=
f the Tsavo Conservation Area=2C we are immersed in nature in all her glor=
y. Another aspect I love is that no one day is the same. One has a great f=
eeling of contributing to something very meaningful and important each and=
 every day.

 after they received reports of an orphaned hippo calf at Oloiden Resort i=
n Naivasha. They arrived to find a tiny=2C days-old calf nestled beside hi=

ronment where fierce fights break out and then are forgotten as quickly as=
 they began. This is all part of hippo society=2C but can be fraught for a=
 small=2C fragile calf. The injuries on Bumpy=E2=80=99s mother suggest tha=
t she died in an intra-species fight =E2=80=94 very likely protecting her=

ecame a ranger and went to the paramilitary school in Manyani. After compl=
eting that=2C I worked in the north=2C in Shaba National Reserve=2C Sambur=
u=2C and then Buffalo Springs. It was here I met a Brazilian priest who of=
fered me a visit to Brazil.</p>

ge and an opportunity I couldn't resist. So=2C I went to visit Brazil and=
 later the Amazon=2C and loved it. I was then given a scholarship to study=
 ecology in Brazil=2C at the Federal University of Esp=C3=ADrito Santo. Th=
is was a three-year degree=2C all taught in Portuguese=2C so I learned the=
 language fluently. I loved the experience=2C but Africa was calling my ho=
me. I wanted to return to Kenya to work=2C rather than elsewhere in the wo=
rld. I returned home in 2015.</p>

rtunity to work on a project led by Stop Ivory and the KWS to audit and ca=
talogue Kenya's ivory and rhino horn stockpiles. At the time=2C there were=
 over 10=2C000 elephant tusks and 1=2C200 rhino horns.&nbsp;</p>

icipation of President Jomo Kenyatta burning Kenya's ivory stockpiles in 2=
016. More than 100 tonnes of ivory was set ablaze in a ceremony in Nairobi=
 National Park. Kenya's statement that day was that=2C to Kenya=2C ivory i=
s worthless unless it is on our elephants. It was a bold event that highli=
ghted the impact of poaching.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir=3D"ltr" style=3D"font-family: Georgia=2C Times=2C &quot;Times New R=
oman&quot;=2C serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 150%;margin: 10px 0;paddi=

 my role has expanded to Operations Commander.&nbsp;</p>

ticulously accounted for in the incident books. The teams reporting in dai=
ly are our Anti-Poaching Teams=2C Head Keepers at the Orphans' Stockades=
=2C Veterinary Units=2C KWS requests=2C and our pilots=2C who fly the skie=
s daily.</p>
