This is The Monthly Brief. In July we sent 28 email alerts with 1,068 busin=
ess class fares inside, out of 54 European cities. And 60 were non-stop. Th=
e best of them went to Gold only, and here they are, with the three things =
that moved the market:

* fuel back on the boil
* the half-empty Atlantic
* Asia, the long way round

All fares are return, per person, business class both ways. =E2=80=98Normal=

al day.

The fare of the month: 66% off, on a route Virgin only started flying in Ja=

The same alert landed in 31 cities; London=E2=80=99s =C2=A31,556 was June=
=E2=80=99s price to the pound. Some fares have habits.

Amsterdam to Muscat, =E2=82=AC1,547 non-stop. Oman Air, normally =E2=82=AC3=
,300+.

Manchester to New York, =C2=A31,693. TAP, normally =C2=A33,750+.=E2=80=8B
London went for =C2=A31,911.

London to Lagos, Zanzibar and Johannesburg, from =C2=A31,754. Kenya Airways=
, normally =C2=A33,750+.=E2=80=8B
Amsterdam was in that one too, Johannesburg for =E2=82=AC1,848.

Lisbon to S=C3=A3o Paulo, =E2=82=AC1,814. LATAM, normally =E2=82=AC3,800+.=

Fortaleza went for =E2=82=AC1,818, non-stop.

Dublin to Boston and New York, from =E2=82=AC2,003 non-stop. JetBlue, norma=

Paris to Tokyo, =E2=82=AC2,389 non-stop. Japan Airlines, normally =E2=82=AC=

A non-stop to Japan rarely goes this low.

Manchester to Melbourne, =C2=A32,852. Etihad, normally =C2=A35,500+.=E2=80=

Sold on the last day of the month. Australia almost never cracks; in July i=
t cracked in four separate alerts, Qatar from Helsinki at =E2=82=AC3,194 an=

Fuel went back on the boil. Last month we wrote that fuel had come off its =
peak. In mid-July the Iran conflict flared up again and jet fuel jumped 18%=

ght months in a row, and Europe=E2=80=99s carriers are just as keen, long-h=
aul and premium first. Expect the normal-day prices above to keep drifting =
up, and the sharp fares to get pulled faster. When the right one lands, boo=
k it the same day.

The Atlantic flew half empty. Bookings from Europe to the US were down 14% =
this July. Frankfurt down 36%, Barcelona 26%, Amsterdam 23% (OMAAT ( https:=

 cut their schedules to match. Somebody has to fill those cabins up front, =
which is why the list above has New York on it three times.

To Asia, the long way round. EASA is telling airlines to stay out of Irania=
n and Iraqi skies ( https://2af1f672.click.convertkit-mail.com/mvug9455gdb5=
hq4wdmdfmhrek7ln2i3h2lzqw/x0hph6he59z587f5hl/aHR0cHM6Ly9hdmlhdGlvbm5ld3MuZX=

l European carriers still have Dubai and Riyadh on pause. The Gulf and Asia=
n airlines cannot pause; their hubs sit in the middle of it. That is how se=
ven airlines came to sell India under =E2=82=AC1,900 in July, Finnair the c=
heapest at =E2=82=AC1,330. The month ended on theme: 316 Etihad fares in a =
single alert on 31 July, Asia, Africa and Australia in one go. Flying east =
soon: take a connection of two hours plus, and expect the odd schedule chan=
ge.

Already booked east? Then spend two minutes on your ticket this weekend, be=
fore the schedule does it for you. These waivers and rules change by the we=
ek, so always double-check the current terms with your airline first. The s=
tandard picture:

* The airline cancels or makes a big schedule change: you choose, free rebo=
oking or a full refund. On flights departing from Europe, that is the law (=
EU261 ( https://2af1f672.click.convertkit-mail.com/mvug9455gdb5hq4wdmdfmhre=
k7ln2i3h2lzqw/25h2hoh3k4gkr4u3h4/aHR0cHM6Ly90aGVwb2ludHNndXkuY29tL2Fpcmxpbm=

ld. Airspace trouble cancels the cash compensation, never that choice.
* Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad have run disruption waivers ( https://=

* Never cancel first yourself. Wait for the airline=E2=80=99s move or a wai=
ver; cancel on your own and your ticket=E2=80=99s fare conditions bite.
* Changing plans by choice is a different story: that depends on your ticke=
t, so read the change and refund lines in your confirmation first.

What to expect next
-------------------

Last month we said the sharpest fares would run to Asia and Africa through =
the Middle East. That mostly held. The Atlantic we did not see coming.

For the next few months: the Americas could be the value play; it hangs on =
fuel. Half-empty cabins pull fares down, $160 fuel pushes them up. India an=
d the Gulf look set to stay sharp either way; the more the Middle East rumb=
les, the harder the Gulf carriers have to discount. Watch the Atlantic; the=
 East can take care of itself.
