** Sleepless nights and panic attacks
------------------------------------------------------------

Fellow nurse Jennifer Melle was suspended and faced investigations from th=
e NMC after she refused to use untrue pronouns about a male paedophile pat=
ient.

She told the Daily Mail this week: =E2=80=9CI was having sleepless nights.=
 I=E2=80=99d burst into tears. If I had a panic attack when I was out=2C I=
=E2=80=99d have to sit down somewhere and I=E2=80=99d call [my children]=
 to talk me through it.=E2=80=9D

Jennifer speaks about the support her daughter gave her: =E2=80=9CShe coul=
d see me crying=2C spending all the time in bed. If I went outside=2C I wa=
s having panic attacks=2C in the supermarket=2C on the bus=2C in the stree=
t. She wanted me to be happy again=E2=80=9D.

At Christian Concern=2C we do all that we can to support the Christians wh=
ose cases we back. But even we don=E2=80=99t see all the hardships they ar=
e put through because they stand for what=E2=80=99s right.

The NMC recently cleared Jennifer=2C but it doesn=E2=80=99t undo the undes=
erved suffering that was caused.

By God=E2=80=99s grace=2C he has used this evil for good=2C though. Jennif=
er=E2=80=99s trust in God is compelling.

Jenny Johnston=2C the Mail journalist who wrote a recent story said of Jen=
nifer =E2=80=9CHer faith in God soars above everything else=E2=80=9D.

Jennifer told her: =E2=80=9CI do feel brave because I do stand up for myse=
lf but maybe=2C in a way=2C I was the fortunate one. God used me for a pur=
pose. For change to happen=2C someone has to say =E2=80=98No=E2=80=99.=E2=
=80=9D

We need more courageous Christians like Jennifer who will stand for what i=

** The mental toll of being left in limbo
------------------------------------------------------------

Bernard Randall lost his job as a chaplain after preaching a chapel sermon=
 where he said that children shouldn=E2=80=99t feel compelled to believe i=
n ideology.

He upheld the freedom for children to believe in the Church of England=E2=
=80=99s teaching on marriage=2C teaching respect for others and for their=
 beliefs.

For this he was vexatiously reported to the Church of England and other au=
thorities as a possible safeguarding risk.

Despite being cleared by secular authorities he was blacklisted by his own=
 Church for upholding its doctrine.

After years of legal challenges assisted by our legal team=2C Bernard was=
 recently given the safeguarding all-clear.

But years of delays where the Church failed to stand with Bernard stopped=
 him from continuing his ministry.

There was never any substance to the complaint. But it has hung over him f=
or years and stopped him from moving forward.

Bernard spoke openly about the mental toll. "Because of the way the Church=
 has treated me=2C we can't move on. Once=2C I started thinking about self=
-immolating on the floor of General Synod as a protest.

"The tears came when I realised they'd just put it down as an unfortunate=
 incident=2C and then carry on in the same way as before."

Bernard still hasn=E2=80=99t found a suitable role to pursue his calling.=
 His case demonstrates just how long and severe the effects of these groun=
dless accusations can be.

** Draft government bill would multiply these stories
------------------------------------------------------------

That=E2=80=99s just two stories =E2=80=93 I could think of many more that=
 the Christian Legal Centre has supported over the years.

But the government=E2=80=99s draft =E2=80=98conversion practices=E2=80=99=
 ban would quickly multiply these cases.

The proposed ban would leave parents and pastors at risk of prosecution fo=
r upholding biological reality and for supporting people who are unhappy w=
ith their same-sex desires or behaviours.

Parents and pastors would be accused of controlling children and church me=
mbers=2C meaning that even the most gentle and appropriate support would b=
e claimed to be coercive.

For example=2C a pastor might teach faithfully at church about God=E2=80=
=99s design for marriage. At some point=2C a member with same-sex desires=
 asks for prayer to resist those temptations and the church leader does so=
=2E

The member is grateful at the time but years later abandons the faith and=
 rebrands this experience as coercive or =E2=80=98controlling conversion t=
herapy=E2=80=99.

This isn=E2=80=99t just theory. These kinds of story are already being pus=
hed by the media.

It=E2=80=99s even happened to us at Christian Concern. We were recently su=
pporting a fringe event and display at the Church of England=E2=80=99s Gen=
eral Synod to warn about the problems with this kind of ban. For this=2C w=
e were branded a safeguarding risk and our display was banned.

It was the exact tactic that was used to push Bernard Randall out of minis=
try for all those years. There was never any valid safeguarding concern bu=
t it didn=E2=80=99t stop him being put through years of punishment.

Countless faithful Christians are at risk if we let the Government=E2=80=
=99s conversion practices bill go through.

pending all the time in bed. If I went outside=2C I was having panic attac=

 to believe in the Church of England=E2=80=99s teaching on marriage=2C tea=
ching respect for others and for their beliefs.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedCo=
ntent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent">For this he was vexatiously=
 reported to the Church of England and other authorities as a possible saf=
eguarding risk.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mce=
PastedContent">Despite being cleared by secular authorities he was blackli=
sted by his own Church for upholding its doctrine.</p><p class=3D"mcePaste=
dContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent">After years of legal cha=
llenges assisted by our legal team=2C Bernard was recently given the safeg=
uarding all-clear.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"=
mcePastedContent">But years of delays where the Church failed to stand wit=
h Bernard stopped him from continuing his ministry.</p><p class=3D"mcePast=
edContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><strong>There was never=
 any substance to the complaint. But it has hung over him for years and st=
opped him from moving forward.</strong></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><=
br /></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent">Bernard spoke openly about the ment=
al toll. "Because of the way the Church has treated me=2C we can't move on=
=2E Once=2C I started thinking about self-immolating on the floor of General=

es=E2=80=99 ban would quickly multiply these cases.</strong></p><p class=

 ban would leave parents and pastors at risk of prosecution for upholding=
 biological reality and for supporting people who are unhappy with their s=
ame-sex desires or behaviours.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p>=
<p class=3D"mcePastedContent">Parents and pastors would be accused of cont=
rolling children and church members=2C meaning that even the most gentle a=
nd appropriate support would be claimed to be coercive.</p><p class=3D"mce=

stor might teach faithfully at church about God=E2=80=99s design for marri=
age. At some point=2C a member with same-sex desires asks for prayer to re=
sist those temptations and the church leader does so.</p><p class=3D"mcePa=
stedContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent">The member is gratefu=
l at the time but years later abandons the faith and rebrands this experie=
nce as coercive or =E2=80=98controlling conversion therapy=E2=80=99.</p><p=

g>This isn=E2=80=99t just theory. These kinds of story are already being p=
ushed by the media.</strong></p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p><p=
 class=3D"mcePastedContent">It=E2=80=99s even happened to us at Christian=
 Concern. We were recently supporting a fringe event and display at the Ch=
urch of England=E2=80=99s General Synod to warn about the problems with th=
is kind of ban. For this=2C we were branded a safeguarding risk and our di=
splay was banned.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"m=
cePastedContent">It was the exact tactic that was used to push Bernard Ran=
dall out of ministry for all those years. There was never any valid safegu=
arding concern but it didn=E2=80=99t stop him being put through years of p=
unishment.</p><p class=3D"mcePastedContent"><br /></p><p class=3D"mcePaste=
dContent">Countless faithful Christians are at risk if we let the Governme=
nt=E2=80=99s conversion practices bill go through.</p><p class=3D"mcePaste=
