### **Horizons Returns to New York with the Psychedelic Medicine Industry o=
n An Upswing**

_Horizons comes back to New York this fall to spend three days asking the h=
arder question of who this is all actually for._



In July, Eli Lilly =E2=80=94 one of the largest [pharmaceutical companies](=
https://doubleblindmag.com/the-complexity-of-developing-pharmaceutical-mesc=
aline-drugs/) in the world =E2=80=94 struck a deal to buy AtaiBeckley, a ps=
ychedelic biotech firm that developed a [5-MeO-DMT](https://doubleblindmag.=
com/eight-truths-about-5-meo-dmt-from-two-experts/)-based nasal spray for t=
reatment-resistant depression. The deal comes mere months after the White H=
ouse declared psychedelic medicine a national priority with Executive Order=
 14401. Both moves have drastically altered the landscape for psychedelic m=
edicine and brought renewed confidence and intrigue to the space after expe=
riencing an industry-wide plateau in 2024. The forward motion is setting up=
 [Horizons](https://horizonsconference.org/), the conference that created t=
he blueprint for psychedelic-conferences, to be more than just an informati=
ve gathering about these changes, but also a place to collectively process =
what it all means for us.

"By this time next year, this could be in doctors' offices, and people want=
 to understand it and want to be prepared for it," Kevin Balktick, the foun=
der of Horizons, tells _DoubleBlind_. "We had a false start a couple years =
ago, but I think people are really feeling [the momentum] now."

Founded in 2007, [Horizons](https://horizonsconference.org/) started as a s=
ingle day of talks at Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village, and has =
since evolved into one of the longest-running institutions in the field. Th=
e event, which is taking place at the New York Academy of Medicine on Octob=
er 15-17, has remained an outlier in its nearly two decades of existence, l=
argely because it was created to fill an [information gap](https://doublebl=
indmag.com/drug-use-of-psychedelic-researchers/) and has remained dedicated=
 to innovation ever since.

"Horizons has always been very different than other [psychedelic conference=
s](https://doubleblindmag.com/rick-doblin-speaks-with-protesters-about-gaza=
-and-maps-israel/)," says Balktick. "It was different in the beginning beca=
use there really weren't very many other psychedelic conferences to go to. =
It didn't exist, so we had to go and make one."

The psychedelic space took a significant hit after the [FDA declined to app=
rove Lykos Therapeutics' MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD](https://doubleblin=
dmag.com/fda-rejects-mdma-ptsd/) in the summer of 2024. Money subsequently =
dried up across most of the ecosystem, multiple businesses laid off staff, =
and the idyllic vision of a better world through MDMA-assisted therapy shat=
tered before our eyes. The psychedelic movement for mental health was under=
 scrutiny in the mainstream media and the industry was left to pick itself =
up off the floor. So, when [President Trump](https://doubleblindmag.com/cou=
ld-psychedelics-change-donald-trump/) signed Executive Order 14401 to fast =
track the pipeline to bring psychedelic medicine to market this past April,=
 it effectively signaled that the space was back on track.=C2=A0

The impacts of this policy change were instant, too. Six days after Trump s=
igned it, the [FDA ](https://doubleblindmag.com/crenshaw-fda-guidelines/)ha=
nded national priority vouchers to psychedelic [biotech firm](https://doubl=
eblindmag.com/compass-pathways-layoffs/) [Compass Pathways ](https://double=
blindmag.com/psilocybin-isnt-legal-yet-so-why-are-states-writing-laws-for-i=
t/)and the nonprofit Usona Institute for psilocybin-based drugs, and to Tra=
nscend Therapeutics for methylone, a compound similar to [MDMA](https://dou=
bleblindmag.com/mdma-comedown/), compressing a review window that normally =
takes a year into a month or two. A field that spent two years in a state o=
f recalibration is now ostensibly being flush with Big Pharma money and sup=
port from the federal government.

"After the FDA declined to approve MDMA, the wind came out of the sails [of=
 the psychedelic industry]," says Balktick. "We were just kind of lost in t=
he horse latitudes. People had stopped believing. But now people believe ag=
ain, and the dream of fully regulated psychedelic medicine is totally back.=
"

But Balktick is quick to point out that Horizons=E2=80=99 programming isn=
=E2=80=99t built around the new wave of political or pharmaceutical [hype](=
https://doubleblindmag.com/b-mushrooms/). The conference runs a single stag=
e with no parallel tracks, so everyone sees the same program, so each speak=
er and presentation must earn its place. The result skips the marquee circu=
it that other conferences lean on.

"[The format] is pretty different from a lot of the [other conferences](htt=
ps://doubleblindmag.com/5-things-we-learned-at-psychedelic-culture-2026/), =
where it's to find a bunch of big names and get the important people," says=
 Balktick. "We just really don't do that. We encourage our speakers to go a=
 lot deeper, and we expect that the audience can handle a much more sophist=
icated discussion."

Dr. Julie Holland, a New York psychiatrist and author who also helps curate=
 the conference's science and medicine program, tells _DoubleBlind _that th=
e organization of the programming is what makes this gathering different fr=
om the others.=C2=A0

=E2=80=9CI think the most important difference is that [all of the programm=
ing is] on one stage instead of constantly having to choose between competi=
ng presentations,=E2=80=9D she says. =E2=80=9CSo there is no FOMO [and] the=
re are no hard choices. This is a conference that has been cultivated to be=
 singular in its presentations. We are committed to presenting new data, ha=
ving dynamic speakers, and not having too many panels where we have so many=
 people on them you lose a sense of what each person has to offer to the co=
nversation. We avoid that, and I am proud that we do.=E2=80=9D

Each day is organized by various lenses to look at the expansion of psyched=
elics. One day focuses on the pipeline between a [drug's approval and patie=
nt access](https://doubleblindmag.com/trip-free-psychedelics-are-the-future=
/), insurance coverage, and addressing the issue of who actually gets to re=
ceive these treatments. Another day covers science and medicine. And anothe=
r day splits policy and culture, and the closing sessions turn to global an=
d traditional Indigenous practices with material expected from communities =
in Gabon and Peru. As Eli Lilly and its pharmaceutical competition turn psy=
chedelic molecules into [treatments and prescriptions](https://doubleblindm=
ag.com/is-ketamine-legal/), Horizons is staking out the harder ground of wh=
o benefits and how, and whether a treatment that clears the FDA can ever re=
ach the people who need it most.

"I really believe that most people, given a chance and [spoken to with resp=
ect](https://doubleblindmag.com/meet-rhoney-stanley-underground-lsd-chemist=
-behind-the-60s-psychedelic-revolution/) for their intellect, can totally u=
nderstand [what=E2=80=99s happening in this space]," says Balktick. "You do=
n't need to have gone to grad school to learn about the science, or to law =
school to follow the policy."

The setting of Horizons is part of what makes it such a fun conference. The=
 official program runs during the day. Everything else fills the nights, fr=
om film screenings to fundraisers to Sunday brunches that have become their=
 own institution.

"The whole week of Horizons has turned into this wonderful sort of psychede=
lic circus," says Balktick. "We're really happy for it."

### How the Arab World Is Forging Its Own Psychedelic Future

In a quiet corner of a hospital museum in Cairo, a glass ampoule of Delysid=
, the name Sandoz gave LSD in the 1950s, has been sitting on a shelf for ha=
lf a century. It's a relic from a time when Egyptian psychiatrists ran LSD =
studies alongside their Western peers, before the drug war shut the science=
 down and the history faded into obscurity. Today that lineage is stirring =
again. In countries where drug penalties can reach execution and mental hea=
lth care is thin, researchers, psychiatrists, and religious scholars are ta=

The easy story is that the West is exporting another trend. The one the reg=
ion's advocates tell is a revival =E2=80=94 of a practice with roots in 9,0=
00-year-old rock art, Sufi ecstatic ritual, and Egypt's forgotten labs. Thi=
s week, clinical psychologist and researcher Nader Wahba maps how four coun=
tries are building a psychedelic future without waiting for permission, and=
 asks the harder question the field keeps dodging: when this scales, who ac=
