### **My Twin the Murderer Uses a Crime Thriller to Interrogate the Narrati=

_Fiction remains one of the most overlooked ways of exploring consciousness=
, identity, and reality itself. Lindsay Kent's debut novel hides all three =
inside a murder plot._

In its pursuit of [scientific legitimacy](https://doubleblindmag.com/your-b=
rain-on-psychedelics/), the modern psychedelic movement has become remarkab=
ly good at explaining itself. We can map brain networks, measure [neural pl=
asticity](https://doubleblindmag.com/does-closing-your-eyes-actually-make-y=
ou-trip-harder/), publish clinical outcomes, debate public policy, and even=
 attempt to quantify mystical experiences. Together, science, memoir, journ=
alism, and philosophy have transformed psychedelics from the cultural margi=
ns into a legitimate frontier in medicine and [consciousness research](http=
s://doubleblindmag.com/lsd-expands-consciousness/).=C2=A0

Yet, for all of this progress, fiction has remained surprisingly unexplored=
. What if fiction is uniquely equipped to explore dimensions of consciousne=
ss that other modes of inquiry cannot?=C2=A0

It was this question that brought me to filmmaker and novelist Lindsay Kent=
. Her debut novel, _[My Twin the Murderer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GZ5R=
2HRM?spcref=3DPRINT_LISTING)_, unfolds as a crime thriller, complete with n=
euroscientists, law enforcement, psychedelic experiences, queenpins of the =
underground, fractured identities, and [government conspiracies](https://do=
ubleblindmag.com/the-conspiracy-theories-that-turned-out-to-be-true/).=C2=
=A0

A murder may propel the plot, but the real subject is the power of narrativ=
e. Long before we understand the world through science, we understand it th=
rough stories. They demonstrate how reality is interpreted, remembered, and=
 understood. They can also expand the boundaries of what we believe is poss=
ible.=C2=A0

So, it begs the question, why is fiction an important modality for storytel=
ling?

=E2=80=9CFiction lets you tackle complicated subjects like addiction, [PTSD=
](https://doubleblindmag.com/psychopharmacology-retracts-lykos-mdma-papers/=
), and [trauma](https://doubleblindmag.com/defining-trauma/) in a more acce=
ssible way,=E2=80=9D Kent told _DoubleBlind_. =E2=80=9CPeople aren=E2=80=99=
t being told what to think or how they should treat themselves. They=E2=80=
=99re simply following the characters. Their guard comes down. They get pul=
led into the story. And maybe, along the way, they come a little more curio=
us. And when it comes to psychedelics, there=E2=80=99s still so much stigma=
 for people who aren't already in the scene. That roadblock prevents a lot =
of people from accessing that information.=E2=80=9D

Accessibility, however, is only part of the story. Lowering our defenses ex=
plains why fiction works, but it doesn=E2=80=99t explain what fiction can d=
o once we=E2=80=99re experiencing it. Fiction can help us access and explor=
e things that nonfiction can=E2=80=99t.

=E2=80=9CNarrative stories create feelings,=E2=80=9D she said. =E2=80=9CI d=
on=E2=80=99t think you can change anyone=E2=80=99s mind without an emotiona=
l connection=E2=80=A6 or without connecting to something deeper than what t=
he conscious mind is already thinking about. I don=E2=80=99t think nonficti=
on can accomplish that in quite the same way.=E2=80=9D

Fiction offers another way of arriving at truth. For Kent, the truth she wa=
nted to explore was around how psychedelics can [alter perspectives](https:=
//doubleblindmag.com/origins-of-western-psychedelic-therapy/). And the expl=
oration begins with Evelyn Malcolm, the novel=E2=80=99s protagonist. A neur=
oscientist whose confidence in the explanatory power of science is graduall=
y destabilized by psychedelic experiences that refuse easy categorization.

=E2=80=9CI loved making Evelyn a complete materialist who thinks psychedeli=
cs are a waste of time, only to force her into experiences she can=E2=80=99=
t possibly quantify in the ways she=E2=80=99s been taught everything can be=
 quantified,=E2=80=9D Kent said. =E2=80=9CThe more she encounters things sh=
e can=E2=80=99t explain, the more she begins to see how vast reality really=
 is beyond what we can perceive.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

Throughout [My Twin the Murderer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GZ5R2HRM?spcr=
ef=3DPRINT_LISTING), characters are repeatedly confronted with experiences =
that resist easy explanation. Consciousness itself comes into question, for=
cing them to reconsider both what they know, and how they have come to know=
 it.=C2=A0 Kent explained that=C2=A0 our desire to [explain consciousness ]=
(https://doubleblindmag.com/can-psychedelics-jumpstart-consciousness/)can u=
ltimately limit our ability to experience it.=C2=A0

=E2=80=9CBefore I had these experiences, it=E2=80=99s like living in a pris=
on cell. If someone had tried to explain what the world outside that cell w=
as like, I would have thought they were crazy,=E2=80=9D she said. =E2=80=9C=
I think that=E2=80=99s what scientists are doing sometimes. They have a map=
. And they=E2=80=99re trying to draw what they think the world looks like w=
hile still staying inside the prison cell. You can leave the cell yourself.=
 You can experience it. Then come back and ask, =E2=80=98What tools do we h=
ave, and which ones fall woefully short?=E2=80=99 But first, you have to le=
ave the prison cell.=E2=80=9D

If consciousness is one of the novel=E2=80=99s central preoccupations, iden=
tity is the other. Psychedelics are often described as dissolving the ego, =
temporarily erasing boundaries of the self. Yet, Kent focuses on doubles, m=
irrors, fractured identities, and characters divided against themselves. Ra=
ther than erasing identity, Kent seems more interested in exposing how many=
 identities we carry.=C2=A0

Inspired by her own experience of having an identical twin, Kent explores t=
he relationship between [ego dissolution](https://doubleblindmag.com/is-ego=
-death-going-mainstream-with-the-god-molecule/) and split identity.

=E2=80=9CMy experiences with [LSD](https://doubleblindmag.com/lsd-psilocybi=
n-pain-study/) and [ayahuasca](https://doubleblindmag.com/shamans-are-going=
-to-jail/) allowed me, even if only for a moment, to separate from =E2=80=
=98Lindsay,=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D, she said. =E2=80=9CI think we=E2=80=99re all=
 Jekyll and Hyde beings. We live in a society that expects us to participat=
e in very specific ways. We suppress the parts of ourselves that we fear pe=
ople won=E2=80=99t accept. But especially as women, there=E2=80=99s a power=
 that=E2=80=99s been suppressed through storytelling for generations. Psych=
edelics allowed me to witness that=E2=80=94to realize that it was a story, =
a program, and that it could be changed.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

If identities are constructed through stories, societies are shaped by the =
stories they choose to institutionalize. That idea is ubiquitous throughout=
 Kent=E2=80=99s novel. Between government agencies, law enforcement, [the u=
nderground](https://doubleblindmag.com/notes-from-the-underground-mushroom-=
market/), [neuroscience](https://doubleblindmag.com/did-you-hear-about-the-=
octopus-on-mdma/), and [pharmaceutical companies](https://doubleblindmag.co=
m/elner-psychedelic-regenerative-business-models/),=C2=A0 each represents a=
 different system attempting to define reality on its own terms.=C2=A0

Another reoccurring theme in Kent=E2=80=99s book is women occupying spaces =
traditionally reserved for men. There=E2=80=99s a pharmaceutical laboratory=
 led by a woman, a female chief of police, and a queenpin running the under=
ground. Even the novel=E2=80=99s language subverts convention by replacing =
masculine expressions with feminine ones.=C2=A0

=E2=80=9COne of the biggest bones I had to pick with all my favorite thrill=
ers is that I felt like men got to do all the fun things,=E2=80=9D Kent sai=
d. =E2=80=9CThey=E2=80=99re the heroes of stories about government psyops, =
[aliens](https://doubleblindmag.com/no-dmt-entities-arent-real/), and [cons=
piracies](https://doubleblindmag.com/psychedelic-conspiracy-theories/), whi=
le women are usually fighting men or escaping abuse. What if women occupied=
 those same worlds? They=E2=80=99re still operating from within the patriar=
chal system, but they=E2=80=99ve learned the rules of the game and are play=
ing it their own way.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

[Gender](https://doubleblindmag.com/neurodivergence-queerness-psychedelics/=
), however, is only one expression of a much larger concern. Every institut=
ion in the book operates through narratives of [authority, legitimacy, and =
control](https://doubleblindmag.com/the-complexity-of-developing-pharmaceut=
ical-mescaline-drugs/). Power is one thing. Who gets to define reality, and=
 whose version of events everyone else is expected to inhabit, is another. =
Kent sees that same issue running through the psychedelic space, where the =
institutions that once weaponized these substances are moving to claim them=
 again.

=E2=80=9CTheres a lot of evidence of what happens when Big Pharma or govern=
ment entities become involved,=E2=80=9D Kent said. We know substances have =
been used as weapons, and now we=E2=80=99re watching corporations re-enter =
the space through a completely different narrative. The stories we=E2=80=99=
re being told to create, for better or worse, define our society and the li=
mitations we live within. Until we understand that, we can't start to make =
real change.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

One of the creative goals for this book, Kent explained, is to inspire [cri=
tical thinking](https://doubleblindmag.com/scientists-arent-sure-if-psyched=
elics-make-us-more-creative/) about the types of stories we =E2=80=94 as in=
dividuals and as a society =E2=80=94 have been telling ourselves. These nar=
ratives ultimately shape the architecture of our lives.=C2=A0=C2=A0

=E2=80=9CWe have to become more curious about the stories we=E2=80=99re tel=
ling ourselves,=E2=80=9D Kent said. Otherwise, we=E2=80=99re constantly rea=
cting instead of asking, =E2=80=98What is this trying to make me think or f=
eel?=E2=80=99I want readers asking, =E2=80=98What is my story, and is it se=
rving me? What have I been telling myself on repeat that may be limiting me=
 in meaningful ways?=E2=80=99 I=E2=80=99d also invite that same curiosity t=
owards the psychedelic renaissance itself. Who are the main players? What a=
re their agendas? What stories are they telling? Are we getting the whole s=
tory?=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

As the first installment of a planned four-book series, _[My Twin the Murde=
rer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GZ5R2HRM?spcref=3DPRINT_LISTING)_ invites =
readers to remain curious and continue asking questions. It suggests there =
is a discipline in resisting premature certainty, and wisdom in holding our=
 convictions lightly.=C2=A0

-on-the-road-with-the-dead/)' has the word 'light' in it for a reason,=E2=
=80=9D Kent explained. =E2=80=9CI think sometimes we take ourselves so seri=
ously in these spaces that we forget to _lighten up_. There has to be room =

dity. Otherwise we're just creating another dogma."
