We recently brought the whole team together for an afternoon designed to
connect colleagues across our offices. It was a great opportunity for
everyone to meet new members of the team, as well as spend time with those
they don’t usually work alongside day to day.
Representatives from each department shared insights into the work they do
and how, by working closely together, we can ensure our clients receive the
full range of support they need. It was a fantastic afternoon of
collaboration, communication and shared learning.

Employment law changes taking effect in April 2026 – key points for
employers
A substantial package of Employment Law reforms takes effect in April 2026,
driven by the Employment Rights Act 2025 and statutory updates. These
changes affect pay, statutory entitlements, whistleblowing protections,
record‑keeping obligations and enforcement.
Pay and statutory rate increases
* National Living Wage increases to £12.71 per hour from 1 April 2026
* Other National Minimum Wage rates also increase, including for apprentices
and 18–20‑year‑olds (£10.85 up from £10.00) and for 16–17-year-olds £8.00 up
from £7.55)
* From 6 April 2026, most statutory family‑related payments increase to
£194.32 per week from £187.18
* Statutory Sick Pay will be payable:
* From day one of sickness
* To all employees (Lower Earnings Limit removed)
* At £123.25 per week or 80% of earnings, whichever is lower
Family leave – day one rights
From 6 April 2026, employees will be entitled to:
* Paternity leave from day one of employment
* Unpaid parental leave from day one
* Employees will also be permitted to take paternity leave after shared
parental leave, increasing flexibility.
Tribunal compensation and employer exposure
* From 6 April 2026:
* Unfair dismissal compensatory cap increases to £123,543
* Maximum week’s pay increases to £751
* From 1 January 2027, the compensatory cap for unfair dismissal will be
removed entirely
* Updated Vento bands increase potential injury‑to‑feelings awards in
discrimination claims
* Lower band: £1,300 to £12,600
* Middle band: £12,600 to £37,700
* Upper band: £37,700 to £62,900
Sexual harassment as whistleblowing
From 6 April 2026, the definition of a protected disclosure in
whistleblowing legislation will be expanded.
As a result, employees who report sexual harassment may benefit from
enhanced whistleblowing protections, including protection from detriment and
dismissal.
Annual leave record‑keeping – new legal duty
From 6 April 2026, employers must keep detailed annual leave and holiday pay
records for six years, including:
* Ordinary and additional annual leave taken
* Leave taken and carried forward
* Holiday pay calculations and pay elements
* Payments in lieu of untaken leave
Increased enforcement
The Fair Work Agency will be established on 7 April 2026, bringing together
enforcement of:
* Minimum wage and SSP
* Holiday pay
* Employment tribunal penalties
* Labour exploitation and modern slavery
Its powers will be rolled out in stages through further regulations, but
Employers should expect an increasingly proactive enforcement landscape.
Key actions checklist for employers
With further reforms already in the pipeline for the rest of the year and
2027, Employers should treat 2026 as a critical transition year. Below is a
key actions checklist that will be useful for employers to work through:
Pay and payroll
* Audit pay rates against new National Minimum Wage thresholds
* Update payroll systems for SSP and statutory family pay increases
* Review salary sacrifice arrangements for minimum wage compliance
Policies and contracts
* Update sickness absence policies to reflect day‑one SSP
* Amend paternity and parental leave policies for day‑one rights
* Review whistleblowing and harassment policies in light of new protections
* Update contracts and handbooks where waiting days or service thresholds

Tribunal and litigation risk
* Review dismissal and redundancy procedures
* Factor increased tribunal awards into settlement and risk assessments
* Prepare for uncapped unfair dismissal compensation from January 2027
Holiday and record‑keeping
* Audit how annual leave and holiday pay are currently recorded

* Implement systems to retain compliant records for six years
Training and governance
* Train HR and managers on the April 2026 reforms
