** Cottam Grange Update - July
------------------------------------------------------------
Good evening=2C
July is now behind us=2C and although it has been a glorious month of suns=
hine for most people=2C it has made life extremely difficult for those inv=
olved in horse racing. The prolonged dry spell has created challenging con=
ditions=2C particularly for trainers with horses that perform best on soft=
ground.
The last genuine soft-ground meeting in Britain was at the Epsom Derby Fes=
tival=2C and since then we have seen field sizes become increasingly small=
=2E Nottingham yesterday was a perfect example=2C with a maximum field size=
of just seven runners=2C one race attracting only two runners and another=
just four. It shows that many trainers are in exactly the same position a=
s us=2C eagerly waiting for some much-needed rain.
Miss Unexpected
At the top of the list is Miss Unexpected=2C who is more than ready to mak=
e her debut once there is some ease in the ground.
Speaking with Declan Carroll this week=2C he is delighted with how she is=
progressing and is keen to start her over a mile. Like Crocodile Power=2C=
she has a high knee action and large hooves=E2=80=94both characteristics=
that suggest she will be at her best on softer ground.
She has a fantastic attitude=2C enjoys her work and continues to please ev=
eryone at home. Both ourselves and Declan are very excited to finally see=
her on the racecourse. Hopefully that will be during August=2C with some=
rain appearing in the longer-range forecasts=2C although we=E2=80=99ll be=
lieve it when we actually see it!
Crocodile Power
The plan remains unchanged for Crocodile Power=2C who=2C like Miss Unexpec=
ted=2C is simply waiting for the rain to arrive.
Following his summer break=2C he is now back in pre-training. He had a fre=
sh set of shoes fitted last week and is currently being lunged for 15 minu=
tes each day=2C alongside an hour on the horse walker. Everything is progr=
essing exactly to schedule=2C with the aim of returning to the racecourse=
in early September.
He looks to be on a very workable handicap mark and=2C once conditions tur=
n in his favour=2C we would be disappointed if he wasn=E2=80=99t back in t=
he winner=E2=80=99s enclosure a couple of times this autumn.
It=E2=80=99s also worth remembering that we=E2=80=99re only just past the=
halfway point of the Flat season=2C with over three months of racing stil=
l ahead of us.
Velvet Assassin
Our two-year-old Velvet Assassin continues to please Declan Carroll.
We=E2=80=99ve deliberately taken our time with him. Although he is physica=
lly well developed=2C we want to make absolutely sure he is 100% ready bef=
ore making his racecourse debut.
He has developed into a strong=2C well-balanced horse both physically and=
mentally=2C and his attitude has been excellent from day one. A willing t=
emperament is often half the battle with young horses.
There is still plenty of turf racing ahead of us this season=2C so there i=
s no need to rush him. We=E2=80=99re looking forward to seeing him on the=
track very soon=2C particularly now that members of his family have begun=
winning races themselves.
Kamegogo
Kamegogo is being prepared with a winter all-weather debut in mind.
She has spicy attitude=2C although it=E2=80=99s still difficult to judge e=
xactly where she stands until she begins more serious work. She is the sam=
e age as Velvet Assassin=2C although at this stage he is considerably more=
forward than she is.
Sir Bobby
We=E2=80=99ve recently built a set of practice starting stalls specificall=
y for Sir Bobby.
He has certainly tested our patience after racing in November=2C refusing=
to enter the stalls in December and then failing his stalls test in May.=
We=E2=80=99re determined to solve the issue ourselves and give him every=
opportunity to fulfil the ability he showed on his debut.
The winner of that race has since gone on to win multiple races=2C giving=
us confidence that Sir Bobby possesses plenty of talent if we can overcom=
e this hurdle.
Our Retired Horses
Retired racehorse Wotalaad continues to thrive with Mrs Bradley=2C who is=
preparing him for a career in eventing. She recently described him as an=
=E2=80=9Cautomatic four-by-four=2C=E2=80=9D which sums him up perfectly.
He has all the stamina and scope needed to make a successful event horse=
=E2=80=94he simply lacked the speed required to compete as a racehorse. He=
=E2=80=99s a wonderfully placid character and is clearly enjoying his new=
career. We=E2=80=99ll be sending a video update on him next week.
Our other retired horses=E2=80=94Copper Queen=2C Chester Le Streak and Des=
ert Dream=E2=80=94are all looking extremely well and enjoying the summer s=
unshine at Cottam Grange.
Desert Dream has even needed sun cream applying to his nose=2C as the whit=
e markings have started to turn pink in the sunshine!
Barton Mills=2C one of our earliest horses who sadly had to retire through=
injury=2C continues to spend his days turned out with Bosham. He suffered=
a mild bout of colic this past week=2C but after treatment he is recoveri=
ng well and=2C all being well=2C should be back to his usual self very soo=
n.
Tipping Service
The tipping service has enjoyed another excellent Glorious Goodwood=2C pro=
ducing 10 winners from our ever-popular longlists=2C alongside several wel=
l-priced placed horses.
At the time of writing (Friday 31st July)=2C we=E2=80=99re still waiting f=
or our first winner today=2C although there are several races remaining an=
d hopefully we=E2=80=99ll finish the meeting strongly.
We have one more day at Goodwood to come=2C with the always fascinating St=
ewards=E2=80=99 Cup still to solve!
After that=2C attention quickly turns to the York Ebor Festival in just th=
ree weeks=E2=80=99 time=E2=80=94one of our favourite meetings of the year=
and traditionally a very successful week for the service.

Looking Ahead
This autumn we hope to expand the syndicate by adding two more horses to t=
he Emporium 100.
The concept has proved extremely popular and offers a fantastic opportunit=

sport we all love.
Our next runners are expected to be Velvet Assassin and Miss Unexpected=2C=
although it=E2=80=99s difficult to say which will make it to the racecour=
se first. Crocodile Power should then return during the autumn campaign on=
ce the ground turns in our favour.
It=E2=80=99s shaping up to be an exciting few months. Both of our unraced=
youngsters have made a very favourable impression on their trainer=2C and=
the anticipation is certainly beginning to build.
