I'm normally a positive guy and I enjoy using LinkedIn. I like posts that
give good advice, I even post the odd thing myself, it can be advice or just
a general observation.
But this month, on LinkedIn, I saw two posts. One I disagreed with and the
other which puzzles me to this day.
"Remove email addresses that havent clicked on your email newsletter in the
past 90 days"
I fundamentally disagree with this advice. Just because someone hasn't
downloaded the images or pressed the button "show blocked content". This
does not mean they haven't read the words in the email. Indeed, I had a
customer who told me, a subscriber purchased on the 43rd email having not
opened the previous 42!
The puzzling post was part of someone's monthly management of their email
newsletter
"I spend about a day going through the email bounces, removing emails and/or
domains that dont exist"
Over the last 20 years, all the email marketing projects I have been
involved, users can configure the software to remove bad email addresses
..... I'm puzzled why any email marketing software would be available today
that didn't do this.

Poor Email Marketing Advice

My initial assumpton with email addresses in your email marketing software
is .... you've spent time and effort collating this list*(see "Ways to
Collate/Grow Your List")
Having spend blood, sweat, tears and even cash monies growing your email
list, dont delete emails from it because someone hasnt 'opened' it or
'clicked' on a link in your email.
Opens are recorded by your email marketing software when the recipient
downloads the hidden indicator/image. If the information in your email can
be decyphered without downloading this indicator, receipients will do this.
I do it, I read emails, I dont always click on the "Show blocked content"
button.
As mentioned above, a ZoomMail user let us know, one of their subscribers
purchased on the 43rd email, having not opened the previous 42. This
ZoomMail user provides quality text content in every newsletter.
So I hope you can see why we believe this is both Bad and Wrong advice - it
makes no commercial sense, with the cost of email marketing being so low and
the reach being so deep to your existing customers and prospects.

One of the people I follow on LinkedIn is an email marketing trainer and he
posted about his email marketing schedule and following weeks activity ...
One of his tasks gave me a nagging feeling
"I spend about a day going through the email bounces, removing emails and/or
domains that dont exist"
In the last 20years I have worked on numerous email marketing software. All
of them have removed bad emails and domains.
While trying to send an email, your email marketing software will
communicate with the receiving email host. Your email marketing software
will send and receive messages ...
If the received message is
5.1.2 (bad destination system: no such domain)
this means ... the domain doesnt exist and your software should remove this
email address from your list - and let you know.
If the received message is
smtp;550 5.0.1 user unknown
this person email account is no longer active - this is terminal as well.
Now sometimes the Email Administrator changes the message and it results in
a 'soft-bounce' not a 'hard-bounce' like the examples above. In the ZoomMail
platform you can set the system to remove 'soft-bounces' after a pre-defined
number of consecutive bounces, maybe, 2 maybe 3, maybe 4, its up to you - by
default we set the removal to 3 consecutive 'soft-bounces'.

marketing software will communicate with the receiving email host. Your =
email marketing software will send and receive messages ...<br><br>If =

data-olk-copy-source=3D"MessageBody">5.1.2 (bad destination system: no =
such domain)</span></i></font><br>this means ... the domain doesnt exist =
and your software should remove this email address from your list - =
and let you know.<br><br>If the received message is<br><font =
color=3D"#808080"><i>smtp;550 5.0.1 user unknown</i></font><br>this =
person email account is no longer active - this is terminal as =
well.<br><br>Now sometimes the Email Administrator changes the message =
and it results in a 'soft-bounce' not a =
'hard-bounce' like the examples above. In the ZoomMail =
platform you can set the system to remove 'soft-bounces' =
after a pre-defined number of consecutive bounces, maybe, 2 maybe 3, =
maybe 4, its up to you - by default we set the removal to 3 =
