July’s update on horses at The Racing Emporium

Cottam Grange Update - July
Good evening,
July is now behind us, and although it has been a glorious month of sunshine
for most people, it has made life extremely difficult for those involved in
horse racing. The prolonged dry spell has created challenging conditions,
particularly for trainers with horses that perform best on soft ground.
The last genuine soft-ground meeting in Britain was at the Epsom Derby
Festival, and since then we have seen field sizes become increasingly small.
Nottingham yesterday was a perfect example, with a maximum field size of
just seven runners, one race attracting only two runners and another just
four. It shows that many trainers are in exactly the same position as us,
eagerly waiting for some much-needed rain.
Miss Unexpected
At the top of the list is Miss Unexpected, who is more than ready to make
her debut once there is some ease in the ground.
Speaking with Declan Carroll this week, he is delighted with how she is
progressing and is keen to start her over a mile. Like Crocodile Power, she
has a high knee action and large hooves—both characteristics that suggest
she will be at her best on softer ground.
She has a fantastic attitude, enjoys her work and continues to please
everyone at home. Both ourselves and Declan are very excited to finally see
her on the racecourse. Hopefully that will be during August, with some rain
appearing in the longer-range forecasts, although we’ll believe it when we
actually see it!
Crocodile Power
The plan remains unchanged for Crocodile Power, who, like Miss Unexpected,
is simply waiting for the rain to arrive.
Following his summer break, he is now back in pre-training. He had a fresh
set of shoes fitted last week and is currently being lunged for 15 minutes
each day, alongside an hour on the horse walker. Everything is progressing
exactly to schedule, with the aim of returning to the racecourse in early
September.
He looks to be on a very workable handicap mark and, once conditions turn in
his favour, we would be disappointed if he wasn’t back in the winner’s
enclosure a couple of times this autumn.
It’s also worth remembering that we’re only just past the halfway point of
the Flat season, with over three months of racing still ahead of us.
Velvet Assassin
Our two-year-old Velvet Assassin continues to please Declan Carroll.
We’ve deliberately taken our time with him. Although he is physically well
developed, we want to make absolutely sure he is 100% ready before making
his racecourse debut.
He has developed into a strong, well-balanced horse both physically and
mentally, and his attitude has been excellent from day one. A willing
temperament is often half the battle with young horses.
There is still plenty of turf racing ahead of us this season, so there is no
need to rush him. We’re looking forward to seeing him on the track very
soon, particularly now that members of his family have begun winning races
themselves.
Kamegogo
Kamegogo is being prepared with a winter all-weather debut in mind.
She has spicy attitude, although it’s still difficult to judge exactly where
she stands until she begins more serious work. She is the same age as Velvet
Assassin, although at this stage he is considerably more forward than she
is.
Sir Bobby
We’ve recently built a set of practice starting stalls specifically for Sir
Bobby.
He has certainly tested our patience after racing in November, refusing to
enter the stalls in December and then failing his stalls test in May. We’re
determined to solve the issue ourselves and give him every opportunity to
fulfil the ability he showed on his debut.
The winner of that race has since gone on to win multiple races, giving us
confidence that Sir Bobby possesses plenty of talent if we can overcome this
hurdle.
Our Retired Horses
Retired racehorse Wotalaad continues to thrive with Mrs Bradley, who is
preparing him for a career in eventing. She recently described him as an
“automatic four-by-four,” which sums him up perfectly.
He has all the stamina and scope needed to make a successful event horse—he
simply lacked the speed required to compete as a racehorse. He’s a
wonderfully placid character and is clearly enjoying his new career. We’ll
be sending a video update on him next week.
Our other retired horses—Copper Queen, Chester Le Streak and Desert
Dream—are all looking extremely well and enjoying the summer sunshine at
Cottam Grange.
Desert Dream has even needed sun cream applying to his nose, as the white
markings have started to turn pink in the sunshine!
Barton Mills, one of our earliest horses who sadly had to retire through
injury, continues to spend his days turned out with Bosham. He suffered a
mild bout of colic this past week, but after treatment he is recovering well
and, all being well, should be back to his usual self very soon.
Tipping Service
The tipping service has enjoyed another excellent Glorious Goodwood,
producing 10 winners from our ever-popular longlists, alongside several
well-priced placed horses.
At the time of writing (Friday 31st July), we’re still waiting for our first
winner today, although there are several races remaining and hopefully we’ll
finish the meeting strongly.
We have one more day at Goodwood to come, with the always fascinating
Stewards’ Cup still to solve!
After that, attention quickly turns to the York Ebor Festival in just three
weeks’ time—one of our favourite meetings of the year and traditionally a
very successful week for the service.

Looking Ahead
This autumn we hope to expand the syndicate by adding two more horses to the
Emporium 100.
The concept has proved extremely popular and offers a fantastic opportunity
for members to become genuinely involved in racehorse ownership and the
sport we all love.
Our next runners are expected to be Velvet Assassin and Miss Unexpected,
although it’s difficult to say which will make it to the racecourse first.
Crocodile Power should then return during the autumn campaign once the
ground turns in our favour.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting few months. Both of our unraced youngsters
have made a very favourable impression on their trainer, and the
anticipation is certainly beginning to build.

maximum field size of just seven runners, one race attracting only two =
runners and another just four. It shows that many trainers are in =
exactly the same position as us, eagerly waiting for some much-needed =
rain.<br>

<u><strong>Miss Unexpected</strong></u></p>
