Admittedly, it is about quantum computers, not superheroes, but bear with me. As our reporting outlines, there are two important and slightly opposing things to keep in mind about quantum computers. The first is that, in some situations, they will offer amazing mathematical superpowers, cutting the time taken to crunch through some problems from billions of years to just hours or even minutes. The second is that those powers come with tight limits: as far as anyone can tell, such mind-bending speed-ups are available in only a few areas.
Quantum computers are unlike superheroes in one important way: they actually exist. Admittedly they are, for now, small and puny rather than musclebound and heroic. But as

money is piling in and plenty of progress is being made. The best-known use is in cryptography, where a sufficiently powerful quantum computer will be able to unravel the encryption that protects credit-card details, financial transactions and the like as they zip across the internet. The tech industry is trying to organise an economy-wide upgrade to new forms of encryption that are thought to be immune to quantum computers’ powers, a subject that one of this week’s leaders will also grapple with.
Quantum computers will also revolutionise chemistry, biology, medicine and materials science. Existing computers cannot properly simulate even simple chemical reactions, such as the production of water from two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Instead researchers have to rely on rough approximations, which often get the details wrong. Quantum computers promise to change all that, making accurate simulations possible for the first time. They may have other uses, too: the finance industry is keen to see whether they can speed up things like Monte Carlo simulation (a bit of maths commonly used to stress-test asset portfolios) and portfolio modelling.
Another article in this week’s section, which is publishing soon, takes an in-depth look at how quantum computing might interact with the hottest subject in computing: artificial intelligence. Powerful quantum computers are still several years away, and to listen to the AI labs talk, it might seem that there will be no problems left for them to solve by then. But we argue that is wrong: the two technologies look less like rivals and more like sidekicks. Two sets of superpowers, in other words, not just one.

Achilles was dipped in the River Styx, whose waters made him invulnerable—except for his ankle, where his mother had held him to do the dipping. Batman is rich, resourceful and clever, but as mortal as anyone else (at least in theory). Even Superman’s powers abandon him in the presence of kryptonite, which is why the supposedly rare mineral turns up in so many of his stories. Invulnerability is boring: to make a superhero compelling, he needs to have a weakness.<br>

I was thinking about all this while reading this week’s
<a data-linkto="https://" href="https://click.e.economist.com/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjQ5NTJ9AAcAAAAABJuhKQtd8vpN2zZBEp_AjgXlP1j_2VQNvCXd8YGlExAp-YY75QIsX81DVLBFI4oCDN4yZNoooS2y7mVnc2pMv_xJsvtmoburt6XBBnE" style="text-decoration:none;" title="Science and Technology section">Science and Technology section</a>.
Admittedly, it is about quantum computers, not superheroes, but bear with me. As our reporting outlines, there are two important and slightly opposing things to keep in mind about quantum computers. The first is that, in some situations, they will offer amazing mathematical superpowers, cutting the time taken to crunch through some problems from billions of years to just hours or even minutes. The second is that those powers come with tight limits: as far as anyone can tell, such mind-bending speed-ups are available in only a few areas.<br>
<br>
Quantum computers are unlike superheroes in one important way: they actually exist. Admittedly they are, for now, small and puny rather than musclebound and heroic. But as

money is piling in and plenty of progress is being made. The best-known use is in cryptography, where a sufficiently powerful quantum computer will be able to unravel the encryption that protects credit-card details, financial transactions and the like as they zip across the internet. The tech industry is trying to organise an economy-wide upgrade to new forms of encryption that are thought to be immune to quantum computers’ powers, a subject that one of this week’s leaders will also grapple with.<br>
<br>
Quantum computers will also revolutionise chemistry, biology, medicine and materials science. Existing computers cannot properly simulate even simple chemical reactions, such as the production of water from two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Instead researchers have to rely on rough approximations, which often get the details wrong. Quantum computers promise to change all that, making accurate simulations possible for the first time. They may have other uses, too: the finance industry is keen to see whether they can speed up things like Monte Carlo simulation (a bit of maths commonly used to stress-test asset portfolios) and portfolio modelling.<br>
<br>
Another article in this week’s section, which is publishing soon, takes an in-depth look at how quantum computing might interact with the hottest subject in computing: artificial intelligence. Powerful quantum computers are still several years away, and to listen to the AI labs talk, it might seem that there will be no problems left for them to solve by then. But we argue that is wrong: the two technologies look less like rivals and more like sidekicks. Two sets of superpowers, in other words, not just one.<br>
