The double-neck guitar: a monument to ambition=2C prog rock theatrics=2C a=
nd very sore shoulders. We love them.
If you've ever watched a musician strap on a double-neck guitar and though=
t=2C =E2=80=98that's unnecessarily spectacular=E2=80=99 =E2=80=94 you're o=
ur kind of person. This month=2C we're celebrating the magnificent=2C unwi=
eldy=2C utterly iconic double-neck instrument. And we have the perfect exc=
use: Rush has returned. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have launched their Fif=
ty Something reunion tour=2C their first concerts together since 2015 =E2=
=80=94 a celebration of over 50 years of music and a tribute to the late=
=2C great Neil Peart.
We couldn't be more excited. And we couldn't be more proud to say that Ged=
dy Lee is a long-standing Rotosound endorsee.
** GEDDY LEE & THE RICKENBACKER 4080
------------------------------------------------------------
Geddy Lee's iconic double-neck is a black Rickenbacker 4080 =E2=80=94 mode=
lled after his beloved 4001=2C but with two necks. The top neck is a stand=
ard four-string bass=2C while the bottom neck is a 12-string guitar with t=
wo humbuckers. Around 1977's A Farewell to Kings=2C Geddy began using this=
double-neck Rickenbacker alongside Moog Taurus bass pedals to create the=
lush=2C sprawling soundscapes of the epic Xanadu. It's one of the most di=
stinctive moments in rock history =E2=80=94 and it all rides on the string=
s.

** THE DOUBLE-NECK HALL OF FAME (ROTOSOUND EDITION)

Geddy is far from alone among Rotosound players who've embraced the double=
-neck. The instrument has attracted some of rock's most ambitious minds=
=E2=80=94 and they all share a taste for our strings.
** Jimmy Page =E2=80=93 Led Zeppelin
------------------------------------------------------------
Jimmy Page's 1969 Gibson EDS-1275 Doubleneck is one of the most iconic gui=
tars in rock 'n' roll history. He used it to perform the numerous 6- and 1=
2-string parts of Stairway to Heaven live=2C and later wielded it on The S=
ong Remains the Same=2C The Rain Song=2C and Celebration Day. A Rotosound=
player and a double-neck pioneer =E2=80=94 Page set the template for what=
the instrument could look like in the hands of a true showman.
** Mike Rutherford =E2=80=93 Genesis
------------------------------------------------------------
If there's one player most associated with double-neck instruments=2C it m=
ight just be Mike Rutherford. Genesis's progressive arrangements demanded=
constant switching between bass and guitar within a single song=2C and Ru=
therford's solution was characteristically inventive: he had a Rickenbacke=
r 12-string and a 4001 bass physically joined together. He later commissio=
ned a custom Shergold double-neck where each neck could detach and be play=
ed as a separate instrument =E2=80=94 possibly the most pragmatic piece of=
rock theatre ever conceived. Mike has long used Rotosound round-wound bas=
s strings=2C noting that they "offer a lot of tonal possibilities."
** Steve Howe =E2=80=93 Yes
------------------------------------------------------------
Steve Howe is another prog legend in the Rotosound family with a fondness=
for multi-neck instruments. He played a black hollowbody EDS-1275 made in=
1960 that uses a 12-string/6-string configuration. Howe also played a mor=
e common white solid body EDS-1275.
Howe has also used a double-neck Fender steel guitar on stage with Yes for=
years =E2=80=94 one neck tuned to E major=2C the other to E9 =E2=80=94 de=
ploying it on sprawling tracks like Going for the One and Awaken.
Another interesting instrument favoured by Steve Howe is the Gibson EMS-12=
35 guitar/mandolin combo=2C as seen on the cover of International Musician=
Magazine shown above.

ghty triple-neck Wal. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman gifted Squire this unique i=
nstrument for his King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table tour. The=
configuration was as follows:
Top Neck: A 6-string bass with doubled strings (tuned A-D-G).
Middle Neck: A standard 4-string fretted bass (often run through a fuzz pe=
dal).
Bottom Neck: A 4-string fretless bass.
