THE BALMORAL – Edinburgh

A stylish 5 star hotel located next to Waverley Station on Princess Street. This Rocco Forte luxury htoel offers understated elegance and super-attentive staff.  The bedroom we had was large with a beautiful marble bathroom and enlarged black and white photos of Sean Connery who officially re-opened the hotel in 1991 following major refurbishment.  It was quite although the downside was that it offered an internal view from the window.  With 188 guest rooms, conference facilities for up to 350 delegates and leisure spa it has a lot to offer in this exciting city.

YARNFIELD PARK TRAINING & CONFERENCE CENTRE – Staffordshire

The venue was easy to find (with the assistance of our trusty SatNav), approximately 15 minutes from the M6 J15, with ample on-site complimentary parking and equidistant from Stafford andStoke-on-Trent railway stations (approximately 10 miles).

The venue is set in its own grounds.  First impressions as you enter the main building are of a functional training centre, with a large and light Atrium – perfect for small to medium exhibition. The natural footfall through this area makes it prime exhibitor space. There is also a manned 24-hour reception desk in this area.  There is a large bar area directly off the Atrium and  a 600 cover cafeteria-style restaurant, with a Costa Coffee outlet.

The meeting rooms are mainly located on the first floor and are of varying sizes, from small syndicate rooms, to the largest space, the Knighton Suite, which holds up to 450 delegates theatre style, and comes complete with a comprehensive AV package. All the rooms are DDA compliant and although fairly basic in decor are clean and functional, with the majority boasting natural daylight.

The 338 bedrooms are a couple of minutes’ walk from the main building and are reached via a covered walkway (very handy when it’s raining!). Housed within four accommodation blocks, the bedrooms are compact but comfortable, all with double beds, flat-screen TVs and en-suite bathrooms. Sixty of the rooms can be converted into twin rooms if required.

The venue boasts super-fast Wi-Fi throughout.

Overall impression of Yarnfield Park is that it offers excellent value-for-money facilities. All of the staff we met were professional, courteous and wanted to help. A great location, combined with extensive, good standard meeting space (and accommodation to support it), year-round facilities and competitive rates, makes it particularly suitable for Association business as well as budget-driven corporate business. Standard-wise, it sits perfectly between an academic-style venue and conference hotel.

30 EUSTON SQUARE – London

Reporting on a site visit to 30 Euston Square, London, headquarters of the Royal College of GP’s.  This is in a great location, right by Euston Station and offers a variety of conference rooms including a tiered theatre for 300 delegates with stage, built-in AV and decent exhibition area outside which can also be used for refreshment breaks.  There are several medium sized rooms dotted around the building, all with daylight, some of which are great for private dining and also the State Rooms which are located on the top floor with a decked outdoor terrace (you can’t smoke out there but you can have a BBQ??).  All areas are very well maintained and of an excellent standard. The venue also has 41 bedrooms to rival any decent four star hotel, which are of a high standard and contemporary in decor .  These are offered at a reasonable rate to delegates attending an event there.

ROCKLIFFE HALL – Darlington, Co. Durham

A visit to the five star Rockliffe Hall this revealed a stunning country retreat nestling in 375 acres of simply beautiful countryside including championship golf course (home of the English Senior Open).   The hotel has 61 luxurious bedrooms (some of the standard rooms have separate sitting-rooms and outdoor terrace or balcony overlooking the grounds which in many hotels would be considered a top suite).  Several meeting rooms are located within the old building and there is also a larger separate conference centre for up to 250 delegates which has a walled garden area outside (ideal for drinks in the summer months).  The spa is superb with huge swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool and several sauna/steam areas (even an ice-room) and treatment rooms, all immaculately maintained.

The staff provided a very high level of courteous customer service with a “nothing is too much trouble” attitude throughout all departments and the entire feeling of getting away from it all was apparent from arrival.

It might not suit everyone’s budget but ideal for something a bit special.

THE HOSPITAL CLUB – Covent Garden, London

We would like to tell you about our visit to The Hospital Club in London – a fun, wacky venue with lots of charm, offering unique and interesting spaces for hire.

Not only does it have a fully operational broadcast-ready television recording studio, but also a thirty seat tiered cinema which can be hired by the hour and a large blank canvas exhibition/gallery with direct access to street level from which vehicular access is possible.  There are numerous nooks and crannies throughout the seven floors offering informal meeting and dining venues including an outdoor terrace, lounges with informal seating and bars and many of the rooms offer natural daylight.  It is a great venue if you are looking for something a bit different, informal and off-the-wall.  If you would like more infiormation, just call on 0161 427 7057 or take a look at the venue’s website:-
